About the Coombsville AVA

Coombsville, designated 2011, sits in a natural amphitheater of hills just east of the city of Napa, at the cool southern end of Napa Valley. Open to San Pablo Bay, it draws steady marine fog and afternoon wind, making it one of the coolest AVAs in Napa. The soils are distinctive: volcanic ash and tuff deposited by ancient eruptions of Mount George, mixed with alluvial material. Coombsville lies within the Napa Valley AVA and within North Coast.

Cabernet Sauvignon leads here as elsewhere in Napa, but the cool climate gives Coombsville reds notable finesse, fresh acidity, and moderate alcohol relative to warmer districts. The maritime influence also makes it well suited to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, and sparkling-wine base. One of the most recently established Napa sub-AVAs, Coombsville was recognized for the way its bowl-shaped terrain and ashy soils set it apart from the valley floor.
