About the Moon Mountain District Sonoma County AVA
Moon Mountain District Sonoma County, designated 2013, climbs the Sonoma County side of the Mayacamas Mountains, the range that divides Sonoma Valley from Napa Valley. Vineyards sit on steep, high-elevation slopes — roughly 400 to 2,200 feet — largely above the fog line, on distinctive red volcanic soils studded with basalt and obsidian. Across the ridgeline to the east lie Napa's mountain AVAs such as Mt. Veeder and Atlas Peak. Moon Mountain District lies within the Sonoma Valley AVA and the larger North Coast AVA.
Cabernet Sauvignon is the signature variety, with Zinfandel, Syrah, and other reds also grown, including fruit from some of Sonoma's oldest hillside vineyards. The elevation puts the vineyards above the marine fog, lengthening sun exposure while cool nights preserve acidity, and the volcanic soils and steep slopes keep yields low. The result is concentrated, firmly structured mountain-grown red wine.
