About the Oakville AVA

Oakville, designated 1993, sits immediately north of Yountville and south of Rutherford on the Napa Valley floor. The AVA is small but is home to a disproportionate number of the most-cited Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards — Martha's Vineyard, To Kalon, Bella Oaks, and Backus among them.

Oakville is slightly warmer than Yountville to the south and slightly cooler than Rutherford to the north. The combination of well-drained alluvial bench soils on the western side and deeper, heavier soils on the eastern side has produced both powerful and elegant Cabernet styles. Robert Mondavi Winery's flagship Reserve Cabernet has been an Oakville bottling since the 1960s, and a long list of Napa cult Cabernets — Screaming Eagle, Harlan Estate, Bond — source from Oakville benchland.
