About the Rutherford AVA
Rutherford, designated 1993, is widely treated as the heart of Napa Valley by both growers and the trade press. The bench land east of the Napa River — sometimes called the Rutherford Bench — is composed of well-drained alluvial gravel and is generally considered the most consistent producer of structured, ageworthy Napa Cabernet Sauvignon.
The term "Rutherford dust," coined by André Tchelistcheff at Beaulieu Vineyard in the mid-20th century, describes a particular fine-grained tannic character widely attributed to Rutherford Cabernet. The phrase is anecdotal — soil scientists don't agree the chemistry is unique to the AVA — but the resulting wines remain the benchmark for traditional Napa Cabernet style, with producers like Beaulieu, Inglenook, and Caymus building their reputations on Rutherford fruit.
